What is TRIM
TRIM (Trauma Risk Management) first originated from the Royal Marines after it was observed that serving personnel were coming back from tours of duty showing negative and long-lasting effects of being exposed to traumatic events. It is now widely used amongst the Royal Navy, Army and Emergency Services in the UK.
TRIM is used as a form of post incident management in order to assess the appropriate support that may need to be put into place for individuals following a traumatic event. TRIM is not to be used to replace a clinical intervention nor is it a form of counselling. TRIM practitioners are trained to assess an individual following a traumatic event, using a structured 1-1 session.
The TRIM practitioner will look for risk factors and based on the overall assessment score will identify if a person needs to be referred for further qualified medical support. A TRIM typically is offered within the first 72hrs post event, with research showing that early intervention following a traumatic event can assist in limiting the effects of their exposure and aid in recovery. TRIM will benefit an organisation by helping to reduce absenteeism and sickness and shows a good duty of care to employees, not least by breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
